The dense, glazed-free surface sheds sample residues easily and resists the thermal shock of repeated furnace cycling. Because alumina is completely inorganic, boats can be fired clean and reused without organic contamination, while trace element levels are controlled so that even sensitive gravimetric and spectrometric methods see no interference from the vessel.
