Three-Tier “Pyramid” of Ceramic Substrates: Al₂O₃ at the Base, AlN in the Middle, Si₃N₄ at the Top

Latest company news about Three-Tier “Pyramid” of Ceramic Substrates: Al₂O₃ at the Base, AlN in the Middle, Si₃N₄ at the Top

From a performance–cost perspective, Al₂O₃, AlN and Si₃N₄ are forming a “pyramid” of roles, each dominating specific tiers of applications rather than engaging in a simple winner-takes-all competition.

Al₂O₃, with unbeatable cost-effectiveness, serves the lower and mass markets; AlN, with high thermal conductivity and low dielectric loss, dominates high-power and high-frequency applications; and Si₃N₄, acting as the “performance ceiling,” targets high-voltage, high-reliability and high-shock environments.

Just like FR-4 and high-Tg materials coexist long-term in PCB technology, the future of ceramic substrates is about choosing the best material for each scenario, not about any single material dominating all use cases.

When planning ceramic substrate roadmaps, it is crucial to understand the application scenario and likely failure modes first, then match Al₂O₃ / AlN / Si₃N₄ accordingly instead of deciding purely by price or spec sheet rankings.
